Atishi to Take Oath as Chief Minister of Delhi Today
New Delhi September 21
Atishi, a senior leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), will be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi today at 4:30 PM at Raj Niwas. Known for having no corruption allegations against her, her appointment marks a significant moment in Delhi’s political landscape. The decision to appoint Atishi is seen as a move that prioritizes merit over family-based politics, often prevalent in Indian parties.
Arvind Kejriwal, the outgoing Chief Minister, recently stepped down from his post amid controversies, including allegations related to the liquor scam case. However, by nominating Atishi instead of a family member to succeed him, Kejriwal is being praised for steering clear of dynastic politics.
In addition to Atishi, five other AAP ministers are also expected to take their oaths of office. While this event marks a new chapter for Delhi, the party itself is facing internal challenges. Some AAP leaders have expressed concerns about the timing of Kejriwal’s resignation and the current state of affairs within the party. Nonetheless, the Lieutenant Governor’s office has officially announced Atishi’s appointment, following the constitutional process, given that Delhi is a Union Territory and not a full state.
This ceremony is expected to be a simple affair, reflecting the party’s current focus on stabilizing its internal situation rather than celebrating the transition in leadership.
