Historic Milestone: NIMS Performs First-Ever TMVR in Hyderabad
Hyderabad November 22, 2024
Hyderabad has achieved a significant medical breakthrough as the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) successfully performed its first-ever Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement (TMVR) on November 19, 2024. This rare and complex procedure was carried out on a 56-year-old patient suffering from severe mitral stenosis due to Mitral Annular Calcification (MAC), a condition that makes traditional surgical options highly challenging.

The patient, who also has hypertension, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease requiring maintenance hemodialysis, was deemed too high-risk for conventional open-heart surgery. Undeterred by these complexities, the expert cardiology team at NIMS, led by Dr. B. Srinivas, Head of the Department of Cardiology, explored cutting-edge alternatives to ensure the patient’s safety and recovery.
The procedure was further complicated by the presence of excessive calcium deposits in the mitral annulus, a condition that has limited the number of successful TMVR cases worldwide. In response, the team employed the LAMPOON procedure, an advanced technique designed to cut a portion of the native valve to prevent post-implantation blood flow obstruction.

This state-of-the-art, minimally invasive TMVR procedure was performed by Dr. Srinivas, along with his skilled team comprising Dr. Manikrishna, Dr. Abhinay Reddy, and Dr. K. Anurag. The new valve was implanted through a blood vessel in the leg, avoiding the need for open-heart surgery and ensuring a quicker, safer recovery for the patient.
The patient’s recovery was remarkable. Within two days, he was walking and performing normal household activities, and by the fourth day, he was discharged from the hospital.

Speaking about the achievement, Dr. Srinivas emphasized the significance of this milestone. “This successful TMVR marks a new era in the treatment of complex cardiac conditions and brings hope to high-risk patients. It also underscores NIMS’ commitment to pioneering advanced medical interventions,” he said.
The success of this groundbreaking procedure positions NIMS as a leader in cutting-edge cardiac care, cementing its reputation as a premier medical institution in India.
