Dr. Manmohan Singh Remembered as a Devoted Family Man by Nephew
Kolkata: As the nation mourns the loss of former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, his nephew Gurdeep Singh, residing in Kolkata, fondly recalls the late statesmanโs unwavering dedication to family despite the demands of his illustrious career.
โHe was my maternal uncle and my motherโs elder brother. Our relationship with him was as normal and cordial as any family, even when he held important portfolios, including that of Prime Minister,โ Gurdeep Singh shared with IANS.
Gurdeep, whose 85-year-old mother Govind Kaur is Dr. Singhโs younger sister, reminisced about the former Prime Ministerโs constant efforts to stay connected with family. He recalled a particularly poignant time in 2004 when his father was unwell.
โAt that point, my uncle called me regularly despite his busy schedule to enquire about my fatherโs condition. After my father passed away, he immediately came to Kolkata to support us. He was then the Prime Minister of India,โ Gurdeep shared, underscoring Dr. Singhโs compassionate nature.
Even as the head of the nation, Dr. Singh prioritized family bonds. Gurdeep recounted a touching moment from September this year when he facilitated a video call between Dr. Singh and his mother. โThat was a truly nostalgic moment for all of us,โ he said.
While some family members have already traveled to Delhi, Gurdeep expressed regret that his mother could not attend due to health concerns. โShe was very keen to go, but her medical condition doesnโt permit it. I will be leaving for New Delhi on Saturday morning,โ he added.
Dr. Manmohan Singhโs legacy extends beyond his political achievements to his deep familial warmth and humility, leaving behind cherished memories for those closest to him.
