Manmohan Singh’s Remarkable Patriotism Highlighted in Post-Surgery Anecdote

New Delhi: As the nation mourns the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a touching story has emerged, underscoring his unwavering dedication to India. Dr. Ramakant Panda, Senior Cardiac Surgeon at AIIMS, Delhi, shared a remarkable anecdote from 2009 when Singh underwent a critical coronary bypass surgery during his tenure as Prime Minister.

The surgery, lasting nearly 11 hours, was a defining moment for Singh’s health and resilience. However, what stunned the medical team was his reaction post-surgery. When the first breathing tube was removed, Singh’s very first words were, “How is the country?” He immediately followed this with, “How is Kashmir?”

Dr. Panda recalled being astonished by Singh’s focus on national affairs, even in such a vulnerable state. When asked why he didn’t inquire about his own health, Singh calmly replied, “I trust that you have done your job well. I am not worried about the surgery; I am more concerned about my country.”

Singh’s humanity and humility also left a lasting impression on Dr. Panda, who praised his strength and discipline. Despite undergoing a major operation, Singh refrained from complaining about pain or discomfort, showcasing remarkable resilience.

Known for his simplicity, Singh preferred to avoid unnecessary formality. “Whenever he visited the hospital, we would go to the gate to welcome him, but he always told us not to do so,” Dr. Panda recounted.

Manmohan Singh’s dedication to his responsibilities, even under challenging circumstances, reflects his extraordinary character and patriotism, leaving behind a legacy that will inspire generations to come.
