Hyderabad, Telangana: A special session of the Telangana Assembly will convene on Monday, December 30, to honor the late Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India, who passed away on December 26.
The session, scheduled for 10 a.m., was announced by Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar, as per a notice issued by State Legislature Secretary V. Narasimha Charyulu. The meeting marks the second sitting of the fourth session of the third Telangana Assembly and will take place during the official mourning period declared by the state.
The Telangana government has observed a seven-day mourning period and declared December 27 a public holiday to honor Dr. Singh’s contributions to the nation. Leaders across party lines are expected to pay tribute to the former Prime Minister, who served two terms and played a pivotal role in shaping modern India.
Legacy in Telangana’s Formation
The special session is expected to highlight Dr. Manmohan Singh’s instrumental role in the creation of Telangana. During his tenure as Prime Minister under the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA), the Bill for bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh was passed, paving the way for Telangana to become the 29th state of India on June 2, 2014.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who paid his respects at the AICC office on December 28, lauded Dr. Singh as “one of the greatest economists, leaders, reformers, and above all, a humanitarian of our times.”
Former Chief Minister and BRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao also paid tributes, recalling the strategic alliance between the Congress and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) during the Telangana movement. He fondly remembered his association with Dr. Singh as a minister in his Cabinet.
