New Delhi, February 28, 2025:
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Tuhin Kanta Pandey as the new Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for a three-year term. Pandey, a 1987-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Odisha cadre, succeeds Madhabi Puri Buch, whose tenure ended recently.
Extensive Experience in Finance and Economic Policy
Tuhin Kanta Pandey has held key positions in the Ministry of Finance, including serving as the Secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM). During his tenure at DIPAM, he played a pivotal role in major disinvestment initiatives, including the strategic sale of Air India and the initial public offering (IPO) of Life Insurance Corporation (LIC).
With vast experience in economic policy, public sector governance, and financial market regulations, Pandey is expected to focus on strengthening investor protection, enhancing corporate governance standards, and ensuring market stability.
Challenges and Expectations
As the new SEBI Chairman, Pandey takes charge at a crucial time when India’s capital markets are experiencing rapid growth and increasing global interest. His tenure will likely involve:
- Strengthening regulatory oversight to ensure transparency and protect investors.
- Boosting foreign and retail investor confidence in Indian markets.
- Enhancing digital surveillance and compliance mechanisms to tackle financial fraud.
- Navigating policy changes in alignment with the government’s economic agenda.
Industry experts believe that Pandey’s policy-making expertise and experience in managing public assets will help shape SEBI’s regulatory framework to meet the evolving demands of the financial markets.
Further details on his strategic vision for SEBI are expected in the coming weeks.
