Three-time Golf Junior World Champion Arjun Bhati is set to be honored with the prestigious National Youth Award (NYA) on April 3 in an official ceremony at Parliament, organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
Arjun Bhati’s Gratitude and Reflections
Expressing his gratitude, Arjun Bhati told IANS, “I am feeling very good. My family and I are very grateful. I am extremely happy and excited about this award. I would like to thank the Government of India for selecting me and considering me worthy of this honour.”
Bhati’s journey has been marked by both sporting excellence and social responsibility. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he made headlines for selling 102 of his trophies to raise Rs 4,30,000, which he donated to the PM CARES Fund. His grandmother also contributed her one-year pension, inspiring Bhati to give back to the nation beyond his achievements in golf.
The Growth of Golf in India
The young golfer believes that the sport is gaining traction in India, attributing its rise to initiatives by the Golf Federation of India and the involvement of cricket legend Kapil Dev as the president of India’s golf tour. He stated, “The world should recognize the talent India has to offer. If Indian players perform well internationally, it will showcase our potential globally.”
Bhati’s Passion for Golf and Early Journey
Bhati first played golf at the age of 9 in school. Initially, his parents were hesitant about his choice due to the sport’s limited popularity in India. However, seeing his dedication, they became his biggest supporters. Having played golf for over a decade, Bhati turned professional three years ago.
In 2023, he received an award from the Virat Kohli Foundation, which he described as a major motivation. Meeting Virat Kohli at the Indian Sports Honour event in 2019 further inspired him, particularly Kohli’s dedication and fitness regimen.
Government’s Support for Sports
Bhati credited the Indian government for its increasing support for athletes, citing Neeraj Chopra’s Olympic gold medal as a significant moment in Indian sports. “Over the past 7-8 years, the government has played a pivotal role in backing athletes through various organizations and schemes,” he remarked.
The young golfer also appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s engagement with athletes. PM Modi had personally acknowledged Bhati’s donation during the COVID-19 pandemic, which deeply motivated him.
Fit India Movement and Future of Sports
Bhati also praised the Fit India Movement, emphasizing how it has encouraged youth participation in fitness and well-being. He acknowledged that recent government initiatives like the India Youth Mission have played a crucial role in fostering a healthier and more active youth community.
The Significance of the National Youth Award
The National Youth Award, conferred by the Department of Youth Affairs under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, recognizes individuals aged 15-29 and organizations for their outstanding contributions to national development. The award acknowledges achievements in health, human rights, active citizenship, and community service, inspiring young people to contribute meaningfully to society.
Bhati concluded by emphasizing that government support has expanded interest in sports beyond cricket, encouraging parents to back their children’s athletic aspirations. With golf on the rise and young players like him making a mark, India’s sporting landscape is evolving toward a more diverse and promising future.
