Yangon, April 5, 2025:
As part of its sustained humanitarian outreach under ‘Operation Brahma’, India on Saturday delivered an additional 442-tonne consignment of food aid to Myanmar, which was recently devastated by a massive earthquake.
The relief shipment, carried aboard Indian Navy’s Landing Ship Tank INS Gharial, arrived at Thilawa Port and was formally handed over by Indian Ambassador Abhay Thakur to Yangon Chief Minister U Soe Thein and his team.
“Meeting the needs of affected people. A large 442-tonne consignment of food aid (rice, cooking oil, noodles & biscuits) carried by Indian Navy landing ship tank INS Gharial arrived today at Thilawa Port,” the Embassy of India in Yangon posted on X.
India had launched Operation Brahma following the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, causing widespread damage and loss of life. The operation includes Search and Rescue (SAR) missions, humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and medical assistance.
With this latest delivery, India has so far sent six aircraft and five naval ships, delivering a total of 625 metric tonnes of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) materials to Myanmar.
On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Myanmar’s Prime Minister and Chairman of the State Administration Council, on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok. The leaders discussed the ongoing humanitarian crisis and India’s continued support efforts under Operation Brahma.
During the meeting, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment as the First Responder in the region and expressed readiness to provide further assistance if required. He also emphasized India’s support for an inclusive and credible democratic transition in Myanmar and reiterated the need for early restoration of the democratic process.
“India stands with Myanmar in this hour of need and is prepared to send more resources as necessary,” Modi told the Senior General.
The two leaders also reviewed progress on India-backed infrastructure projects in Myanmar, with PM Modi reaffirming India’s commitment to the developmental needs of all communities in the country.
India’s proactive response and leadership in regional disaster relief once again underscore its role as a reliable partner and humanitarian actor in South and Southeast Asia.
