Infosys Fires 240 Trainees Over Assessment Failures, Announces Relief Measures Amid Cost-Cutting Climate

In a significant move that has stirred discussions across the IT industry, leading tech giant Infosys has terminated 240 trainee employees after they failed to meet the required standards in internal assessments during their training period. The affected trainees were officially informed via email on April 18.

This development mirrors a similar incident from February 2025, when the company let go of over 300 trainees on the same grounds. According to reports, the recent dismissals stem from poor performance in the company’s Generic Foundation Training Program, even after three attempts, additional training time, and multiple doubt-clearing sessions.

The termination email stated:

“Despite being given additional training time, doubt-clearing sessions, multiple mock assessments, and three attempts, you have not met the qualifying standards… you cannot continue your journey in the apprenticeship program.”

Relief and Support Initiatives

While the decision has sparked concern and criticism in some quarters, Infosys has introduced several supportive measures to ease the transition for the dismissed trainees:

  • One month’s salary as ex gratia payment
  • Relieving letters to aid future job searches
  • Access to professional outplacement services
  • Free upskilling programs through NIIT and UpGrad
  • Option to reapply for roles at Infosys BPM upon completion of the external training
  • Transportation from the Mysuru training campus to Bengaluru
  • Travel allowance for returning home
  • Temporary stay at Employee Care Centre in Mysuru
  • Access to counseling services

Infosys also highlighted that trainees can opt for the sponsored external training program to enhance their IT skill sets for future opportunities.

Onboarding Woes and Economic Pressures

Notably, some of the dismissed trainees had reportedly waited for over two years for onboarding, only to face termination. The situation reflects broader challenges in the IT industry, where cost-cutting measures and project constraints have intensified amid a global economic slowdown.

Assessment results for the next batch of Infosys trainees are expected in the coming week, and insiders say a similar approach could be followed depending on performance outcomes.

The move underscores a growing emphasis on performance-based retention in India’s tech sector, as companies navigate uncertain economic terrain while striving to maintain training and operational efficiency.
