Hyderabad Shocker: Sri Krishna Shobha Yatra Electrocution

In a shocking incident that cast a pall over Sri Krishna Janmashtami celebrations, six devotees lost their lives and four others were seriously injured after receiving an electric shock during the Sri Krishna Shobha Yatra at Gokul Nagar, Ramanthapur under Uppal police station limits on Sunday evening.

How the Tragedy Unfolded

According to eyewitnesses, the mishap occurred during the concluding stage of the Shobha Yatra, when the decorated chariot carrying Lord Krishna’s idol came to a halt. As devotees enthusiastically pushed the chariot forward, its upper structure accidentally came into contact with high-tension electric wires overhead. Within moments, ten people who were in direct contact with the chariot received severe shocks.

Five of them died on the spot, while four others collapsed with critical burns and injuries. Locals and police personnel rushed to their aid, shifting them immediately to nearby hospitals.

Victims Identified

Police later confirmed the identities of the deceased as:

  • Rajendra Reddy
  • Vikas
  • Sri Krishna
  • Srikanth
  • Suresh Yadav
  • Ghanesh

9Their bodies were first taken to Matrix Hospital and later shifted to Gandhi Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examinations.

Condition of the Injured

Of the three injured, one devotee is undergoing treatment at Matrix Hospital, another was moved to a private hospital in Nampally, while two others are said to be receiving treatment locally. Doctors have stated that their condition is stable but require close monitoring.

Police and Public Reaction

Senior officers from the Rachakonda Police Commissionerate reached the spot immediately after the accident. A large crowd gathered in shock and grief as the news spread. Police have taken up a detailed investigation into how the chariot was allowed to move under high-tension wires without adequate safety measures.

Authorities are also examining whether prior safety permissions and guidelines were followed during the organization of the Shobha Yatra.

Grief and Anguish in the Community

What was meant to be a joyous celebration of Sri Krishna Janmashtami has turned into a day of mourning for Ramanthapur residents. Locals expressed anger over the negligence that led to the tragedy, while relatives of the victims were inconsolable. Many demanded accountability from the organizers and electricity authorities for failing to prevent the accident.

Government Response Expected

As news of the accident spread across the city, political leaders and public representatives began expressing condolences. Sources indicate that the state government may announce ex-gratia compensation for the families of the deceased and financial aid for the injured.

Police have urged citizens to remain calm while assuring that all aspects of the mishap, including possible lapses in safety protocols, will be thoroughly investigated.
