Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Attacked During Jan Sunvai; Attacker from Gujarat Detained
New Delhi, August 20, 2025 – In a shocking incident, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during her weekly Jan Sunvai (public hearing) session at her official residence in Civil Lines on Wednesday morning.
The attacker has been identified as Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya (41), a resident of Rajkot, Gujarat. He was immediately overpowered by security personnel and taken into custody. The accused is now being interrogated at Civil Lines Police Station, with the Delhi Police coordinating with their Gujarat counterparts to verify his background and motive.
The Incident
According to Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva, the incident took place while CM Gupta was meeting citizens and listening to grievances.
“A man approached her with some papers, claiming they were court documents, and suddenly grabbed her hand, trying to pull her towards him. In the scuffle, she suffered a light blow to her head. Reports that she was slapped or attacked with stones are false,” Sachdeva clarified.
He further added that the Chief Minister was examined by doctors and her condition is stable. “She is a strong woman. I met her personally. She is resting but determined not to cancel her future programs,” he said.
Eyewitnesses, however, gave mixed accounts. One attendee, Shailendra Kumar, who had come to raise complaints about sewerage issues, said, “We heard a commotion, and by the time we turned, the police had already caught the man. The CM looked shaken.” Another witness, Anjali, claimed she saw the accused slap the Chief Minister, though Sachdeva’s account disputed this version.

Possible Motive
Preliminary reports suggest that the attacker’s motive may be linked to the incarceration of one of his relatives in Tihar Jail. He had reportedly brought legal documents seeking help for the release of the relative. The police are verifying this angle.
Political Reactions
The incident drew widespread condemnation across party lines.
- Atishi, senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Delhi CM, said: “This is highly condemnable. In a democracy, disagreements must be voiced peacefully. There is no place for violence. The police must take strict action.”
- Delhi Congress President Devender Yadav called it “very unfortunate,” raising concerns about women’s safety in the capital. “If the Chief Minister herself is not safe in Delhi, what about ordinary women?” he questioned.
- Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa alleged a “political conspiracy” behind the assault. “The opposition cannot tolerate a Chief Minister who spends hours meeting citizens face-to-face without restrictions,” he claimed.
BJP leaders reaffirmed that the Jan Sunvai program will continue as a direct people-connect initiative despite the attack.
Security Concerns
The attack has raised serious questions about security lapses, as it occurred inside the Chief Minister’s official Civil Lines residence, which is designated as a high-security zone.
Following the incident, the Delhi Police have tightened security around the residence, with senior officials supervising the investigation. A team of doctors is closely monitoring the Chief Minister, who is said to be recovering well.
Past Precedents
This is not the first time a Delhi Chief Minister has been targeted during public events. In 2019, then-CM Arvind Kejriwal was slapped by a man during a Lok Sabha campaign roadshow. The recurrence of such incidents has intensified calls for strengthened security measures during public interactions involving top leaders.
Police Action
The Delhi Police have assured a comprehensive investigation into the matter to uncover the exact motive and any possible conspiracy. The accused will be produced in court after interrogation, officials confirmed.
Further details are awaited as the probe progresses.
