India Strikes Gold! Sepak Takraw Team Shines in Nagoya 2026

Tokyo, February 02,2026

India’s men’s sepak takraw team achieved a remarkable milestone by clinching the gold medal in the men’s quadrant (quad) event at the Asian Sepaktakraw Championship 2026, held in Nagoya, Japan, from January 30 to February 1 (or up to February 2 in some references). This tournament served as a key test event ahead of the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, where sepak takraw will feature.

The Indian squad delivered an outstanding performance, overcoming strong regional competitors. In the semifinals, they defeated Thailand convincingly by 2-0 (sets: 15-10, 17-14). In a thrilling final against the host nation Japan at the Mizuho Park venue, India emerged victorious in a hard-fought 2-1 match (sets: 15-10, 12-15, 15-12), securing the top spot on the podium.

The victorious Indian team included key players such as Akash Yumnam (often referred to as Y. Akash or S. Akash), Sandeep Kumar, Arun, Ram Kumar, Bobby Kumar, and S. Malemnganba (or Malamgasing), among others. Their collective effort, dedication, and skill were instrumental in defeating formidable international opponents and marking a significant breakthrough on the continental stage.

Expressing immense pride in this achievement, S.R. Prem Raj, South Asia President and Joint Secretary of the Sepaktakraw Federation of India (STFI), described it as a proud moment for the nation and a crucial milestone in elevating India’s presence in the sport globally. Perik Suresh, another senior official from the federation, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the team’s ability to triumph over powerful rivals.

The success was attributed to the excellent leadership of Chief Coach Hemraj and the efficient management by General Secretary Naresh Kumar. Officials from the Telangana Sepaktakraw unit, including Secretary Srinivas Reddy, and STFI President Srinivasulu, congratulated the team members and wished them continued success.

Looking ahead, the federation extended best wishes to the Indian team heading to the 6th South Asian Sepaktakraw Championship in Colombo, Sri Lanka, scheduled from February 7 to 10. This gold medal victory boosts confidence as India prepares for future international competitions, including the full Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games.
