Nationwide Strike Disrupts Banks, Schools & Transport Across India

Bharat Bandh Today: Nationwide Strike Likely to Disrupt Key Services Across India

A nationwide Bharat Bandh is being observed today, February 12, following a joint call by major trade unions and farmers’ associations to protest against various policies of the Central Government. The bandh has received support from the Indian National Congress, with the All India Congress Committee (AICC) directing its state units to actively participate in the protests.

According to organisers, around ten central trade unions, along with several farmers’ bodies, have extended their support to the nationwide shutdown. Protesters have raised concerns over labour reforms, privatisation, wage issues, social security, and the recent trade developments between India and the United States.

Services Likely to Be Affected

The bandh is expected to disrupt several services across different states:

  • Banks may witness limited functioning or closure in some regions.
  • Government offices could operate with reduced staff attendance.
  • Schools and colleges are likely to remain closed in areas where protests are intense.
  • Public transport services, including buses and local transport, may be partially affected.
  • Markets and commercial establishments may remain shut in several cities.

However, essential services such as hospitals, ambulance services, airports, and emergency utilities are expected to function normally. Authorities have stated that law enforcement agencies are on alert to maintain peace and ensure that critical services remain unaffected. In sensitive areas, local administrations may take precautionary measures, including temporary closure of educational institutions.

Protest Against Labour Codes

One of the major issues behind the bandh is the Central Government’s introduction of four new labour codes, which replaced 29 existing labour laws. Trade unions have alleged that these new codes could weaken workers’ rights, reduce job security, and make it easier for employers to terminate employees.

Labour leaders argue that the reforms favour corporates and private employers at the cost of workers’ welfare. They have also expressed dissatisfaction over privatisation policies, low wages, and inadequate social security measures.

Farmers’ Concerns

Farmers’ organisations have also joined the protest, alleging that recent developments in the US–India trade framework could adversely impact Indian farmers. According to farm leaders, allowing greater access for American agricultural products and reducing tariffs may hurt domestic producers and lead to financial losses.

In addition, unions and farmer groups have demanded the strengthening and effective implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), along with the withdrawal of certain proposed bills.

Traffic and Public Advisory

With rallies, road blockades, and demonstrations planned in various states, traffic disruptions are likely in major cities and highways. Motorists have been advised to plan their travel in advance and consider alternative routes where necessary.

While the full impact of the Bharat Bandh will vary from state to state, authorities have appealed for peaceful demonstrations and cooperation from the public to maintain law and order.

Further updates are expected as the situation unfolds across the country.
