Railway Police Seize ₹1.22 Crore Hawala Cash on Devagiri Express; One Arrested at Secunderabad
Hyderabad: The Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) seized ₹1.22 crore in suspected hawala money from a passenger travelling on the Devagiri Express and arrested one person at Secunderabad.
The arrested person has been identified as Vijay Ambadas Gupta, 40, a resident of Amravati district in Maharashtra. Police said he was travelling from Mumbai to Hyderabad when he was intercepted during a joint checking operation conducted between Bollaram and Malkajgiri railway stations on Tuesday.
During the inspection, police found a bag in his possession containing ₹1,22,70,000 in cash. When questioned, Gupta allegedly failed to produce valid documents to explain the source and purpose of the money.
According to police, the accused revealed during questioning that he had collected the cash from a person identified as Santosh Seth, who reportedly runs Kantha Jewellery in Mumbai. He was allegedly instructed to deliver the money to another person named Banti, associated with a jewellery shop at Monda Market in Secunderabad.
Police said Gupta was promised ₹5,000 for transporting the cash. As he could not provide any satisfactory explanation or supporting documents, the cash was seized and he was taken into custody for further questioning.
Officials said the matter is being investigated to identify the source of the money, the intended recipient and whether the cash was linked to illegal hawala transactions. Further action will be taken as per law.
