New Delhi, June 11:

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Thursday urged the Centre to constitute a dedicated task force for six major metropolitan cities and invest ₹1 lakh crore in each city to transform them into globally competitive urban centres.

Addressing the 11th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog in New Delhi, the Chief Minister proposed the creation of an “M6 Cities Task Force” for New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. He noted that these six cities account for nearly 10 per cent of India’s population and generate almost one-fourth of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Calling these metros the true engines of India’s economy, Revanth Reddy said they still lag behind leading global cities and require focused investment to drive the country’s development agenda under the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.

“We urge a national task force, empowered to act with speed, to develop all six cities to global standards, not as expenditure, but as investment in assets that generate revenues, jobs and international standing for a developed India,” he said.

The Chief Minister sought the Centre’s support for several strategic infrastructure projects in Telangana. He requested assistance for the Regional Ring Road (RRR), describing it as the backbone of Hyderabad’s next phase of growth that would open new industrial, logistics and residential corridors.

He also proposed a 12-lane expressway connecting Bharat Future City to the Machilipatnam deep-water port in Andhra Pradesh, aiming to strengthen access to global supply chains and boost economic activity.

Revanth Reddy urged the Union Government to approve Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase-II to promote clean, sustainable and low-carbon urban mobility. He further sought support for the Musi River Rejuvenation Project, which aims to restore Hyderabad’s historic river and develop a world-class riverfront.

Highlighting Telangana’s ambitious development plans, the Chief Minister requested recognition and financial support for the proposed 30,000-acre net-zero greenfield Bharat Future City. He also sought approval for the S. Jaipal Reddy Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Project.

In the technology sector, Revanth Reddy called for support under the India Semiconductor Mission, including the establishment of an Assembly, Packaging and Manufacturing Plant (APMP), OSAT clusters and a Micro-LED fabrication unit. He also requested the establishment of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Hyderabad.

The Chief Minister said Telangana’s development vision is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Viksit Bharat 2047 mission and stressed the importance of creating world-class urban infrastructure and a knowledge-driven economy.

He said the state is actively pursuing partnerships with globally renowned educational institutions and has already achieved a significant milestone with the University of London deciding to establish an offshore campus in Hyderabad.

According to Revanth Reddy, Telangana is developing dedicated “EEE” (Education, Environment and Employment) clusters to attract top institutions, faculty, students and Global Capability Centres (GCCs), thereby generating substantial investments and employment opportunities.

Emphasising education reforms, the Chief Minister referred to the Socio-Economic, Educational, Employment, Political and Caste Survey (SEEPCS) conducted by the Telangana government in 2024, which covered 3.55 crore people across 242 castes and nearly 97 per cent of households in the state.

The survey findings, he said, revealed serious concerns regarding the quality of education and declining public confidence in government schools. He called for a transformative shift in the education system to focus on quality, outcomes and future-ready skills.

“While the current system has expanded access to education, the time has come to prioritise quality and outcomes to prepare our youth for a rapidly changing world,” he said.
