New Delhi, June 25: Apple has increased the prices of select MacBook and iPad models, reflecting a broader shift in the global consumer electronics industry as soaring memory chip costs and AI-driven semiconductor demand put pressure on manufacturers’ margins.

Industry analysts said the move signals that even technology giants like Apple are finding it increasingly difficult to absorb the sharp rise in component costs, particularly for memory and storage chips.

The price revision follows Apple’s indication that it could no longer fully offset the rising costs of key components, with memory prices surging amid growing demand from artificial intelligence (AI) data centres and cloud computing providers.

According to Prabhu Ram, Vice President at CyberMedia Research (CMR), the memory market is witnessing a structural transformation rather than a typical semiconductor cycle.

“The memory cost environment is undergoing a fundamental shift. What we are are seeing is no longer just the familiar ebb and flow of the semiconductor cycle, but the emergence of a new demand paradigm driven by AI infrastructure investments,” Ram said.

He explained that memory suppliers are increasingly allocating production capacity toward AI-focused data centres, creating supply constraints and pushing up costs for consumer electronics manufacturers.

“Apple has traditionally been among the best-positioned companies to absorb supply chain shocks and manage component cost volatility. The fact that it is now passing some of these costs on to consumers is a significant signal for the broader industry,” he added.

Analysts at Counterpoint Research noted that memory prices have risen more than fourfold since the fourth quarter of 2025, significantly impacting profit margins across the consumer electronics sector.

“Apple has done well to hold prices steady until now, though it hinted at increases last week,” said Tarun Pathak, Research Director at Counterpoint Research.

According to the research firm, the latest price revisions affecting the MacBook Neo, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iPad Air, and iPad Pro Wi-Fi models indicate a wider change in industry pricing strategies rather than isolated product-specific adjustments.

Counterpoint Research expects other PC and tablet manufacturers to follow suit by implementing selective price increases, reducing promotional discounts, and focusing more heavily on premium product segments to offset rising production costs.

The firm also warned that increasing bill-of-material costs, driven primarily by expensive memory components, are likely to remain a long-term challenge for device makers as global investments in AI infrastructure continue to fuel semiconductor demand.

The latest developments underscore how the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is reshaping the technology supply chain, with higher component costs increasingly being passed on to consumers through premium device pricing.
