Washington, D.C.: US President Donald Trump has unveiled the US Air Force’s new VC-25B “Bridge” aircraft, describing it as a powerful symbol of American strength and a much-needed replacement for the ageing presidential fleet.
Speaking at Joint Base Andrews after touring the aircraft and meeting servicemembers, Trump said the modified Boeing 747 would serve as an interim presidential aircraft while the next-generation Air Force One programme is completed.
“The other plane was about 35 years old and it was time,” Trump said, referring to the current VC-25A aircraft that have served multiple US presidents. He added that the new aircraft is significantly larger and better reflects America’s global stature.
The VC-25B Bridge aircraft arrived at the Presidential Airlift Group earlier this week and has already begun a series of commissioning flights. These flights are intended to validate mission capabilities and complete final certification requirements before the aircraft formally joins the presidential airlift fleet.
US Air Force Secretary Troy Meink emphasized that the safety and security of the President remain the service’s highest priority. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ken Wilsbach described the programme as proof that the Air Force can rapidly deliver a secure and reliable airborne command platform when needed.
Trump praised the military personnel and contractors involved in the project, noting that the aircraft was transformed into a “flying White House” in approximately 10 months. He highlighted its luxury interiors, advanced communications systems, and enhanced operational capabilities.
According to Air Force officials, the aircraft has undergone extensive modifications focused on security, mission communications, and presidential travel requirements. It is equipped with state-of-the-art secure communication systems and has been developed under a rigorous engineering process to meet the demands of the Commander-in-Chief.
Reporters who toured the aircraft described a spacious interior featuring tan leather seating, conference areas, extensive wood panelling, lay-flat seating, and multiple communications systems designed to support presidential operations during travel.
Trump also thanked the Emir of Qatar for making the aircraft available as the United States sought a faster solution while awaiting delivery of the delayed Boeing VC-25B Air Force One programme.
Highlighting the aircraft’s capabilities, Trump said it features multiple layers of advanced communications technology and will play a prominent role in America’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations and future Independence Day commemorations.
The President noted that his return from the recent G7 Summit marked the final planned trip aboard the existing VC-25A aircraft. He suggested that the older planes, which entered service during the administration of President George H.W. Bush, could eventually be placed in museums because of their historic significance.
The current VC-25A fleet has served every US president since its introduction and remains one of the most recognizable symbols of the American presidency. Designed to function as airborne command centres, the aircraft can support the President during national emergencies and global crises.
With the introduction of the VC-25B Bridge aircraft, the US Air Force aims to ensure uninterrupted presidential airlift capabilities while work continues on the permanent next-generation Air Force One fleet.
