New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu has described Operation Sindoor and India’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty as decisive measures against terrorism and those who support or harbour terrorists.
In her address to the nation on the eve of the 80th Independence Day, President Murmu paid tribute to the courage of the Indian armed forces and recalled the significance of Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7.
She said the operation demonstrated the armed forces’ ability to carry out precision action against terrorism and sent a clear message to terrorists and their supporters that they would have to face the consequences of their actions, regardless of where they hide.
Indus Waters Treaty suspension in national interest
Referring to the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, President Murmu said the decision was taken in the interest of the nation, particularly its farmers.
She described the suspension of the treaty with a country that harbours terrorism as a decisive step, linking the move to India’s broader response to terrorism and national security concerns.
End of Maoism a major achievement
The President also highlighted the end of Maoism as a significant achievement for the country. She said areas that were once strongholds of rebels are now witnessing inclusive development and greater opportunities.
Referring to the Bastar Olympics, she noted that the event attracted a large number of sportspersons, while artists also got an opportunity to showcase their talent.
Khelo India boosts sporting performance
President Murmu praised the growth of India’s sports ecosystem and said initiatives such as Khelo India, along with increased government investment in sports, have contributed to a remarkable improvement in India’s performance at international events.
She said the development of sporting infrastructure and opportunities is helping Indian athletes perform at a higher level on the global stage.
Focus on people’s participation
The President also emphasised the importance of Jan Bhagidari (people’s participation) in nation-building. She said public participation has always been an integral part of India’s democratic tradition and that citizens are increasingly contributing to national welfare campaigns.
President Murmu further said that growing cultural pride is strengthening the country’s inner confidence. India, she noted, is moving forward by harmonising its heritage with development.
