New Delhi: India is all set to host the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying the country is fully prepared for the high-profile gathering of global leaders.
Ahead of the two-day summit, PM Modi shared a video on X showcasing the specially decorated Bharat Mandapam, the venue for the summit. The video concluded with the message, “India is gearing up for BRICS 2026.” Sharing the video, Modi posted: “All set for BRICS 2026!”
Global Leaders to Attend
Several prominent world leaders are expected to arrive in the national capital for the summit, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
As the BRICS chair for 2026, India will bring together leaders of BRICS member and partner countries, along with outreach invitees, for discussions on economic cooperation, global challenges and regional developments.
India’s BRICS 2026 Priorities
India’s BRICS chairship is being guided by the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The theme reflects the government’s emphasis on a people-centric approach based on the principle of “Humanity First.”
During the summit, leaders are expected to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation within BRICS on shared priorities, while exchanging views on important global and regional issues.
BRICS Membership
The BRICS grouping currently comprises Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.
The BRICS partner countries are Belarus, Cuba, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
India is a founding member of BRICS and has previously held the group’s chairship in 2012, 2016 and 2021. India assumed its fourth BRICS chairship on January 1, 2026. This year also marks 20 years since the establishment of BRICS.
Tight Security in New Delhi
With several high-profile leaders expected to attend, elaborate security arrangements have been put in place across New Delhi.
The Delhi Police, in coordination with multiple security agencies, has deployed around 15,000 police personnel and 200 companies of paramilitary forces for the summit.
Authorities have also issued public advisories regarding routes that may face restrictions during the movement of VVIPs. Commuters in the national capital are expected to face traffic diversions and restrictions in several areas during the summit.
Over 350 BRICS Meetings Held
As part of India’s BRICS chairship, more than 350 meetings and high-level engagements have been conducted to strengthen the strategic partnership among member countries.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India’s BRICS agenda focuses on three key pillars: political and security cooperation, economic and financial cooperation, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
The government said these engagements, along with business-to-business and people-to-people initiatives, have sought to advance practical and development-oriented outcomes under India’s BRICS chairship.
With the summit now just days away, New Delhi is preparing to welcome world leaders for a major diplomatic gathering that comes as BRICS marks two decades of its existence.
