Powerful 8.0-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Panama, Tsunami Threat Issued for Coastal Regions

PANAMA, October 9: A powerful earthquake measuring magnitude 8.0 struck Panama on Friday, October 9, 2026, prompting tsunami threat assessments for coastal areas of Panama and several neighbouring countries, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC).

The earthquake occurred at approximately 12:56 p.m. Panama local time (11:26 p.m. IST), with its epicentre located about 14 kilometres southwest of Pitaloza Arriba in Panama. The quake originated at a depth of approximately 33 kilometres below the Earth’s surface, at coordinates 7.54° North latitude and 80.75° West longitude.

Following the earthquake, tsunami threat messages were issued for several coastal regions, including Panama, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Guatemala, along with other areas along the Pacific coast. Authorities and monitoring agencies assessed the potential impact and advised coastal communities to remain alert for official updates.

The earthquake’s magnitude and relatively shallow depth raised concerns about possible damage and tsunami-related risks. Further assessments were expected to establish the extent of the impact and determine whether additional precautionary measures were necessary.

Authorities urged residents in potentially affected coastal areas to follow official emergency instructions and rely on verified information from local disaster management agencies.

The situation remained developing, with further updates expected from seismic monitoring agencies and regional authorities.
