Indian Stock Market Today: Sensex, Nifty Close Nearly Flat
Indian benchmark equity indices ended Tuesday’s trading session on a subdued note, with the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 closing marginally lower amid mixed sectoral trends. However, broader markets witnessed strong buying interest, with midcap and smallcap stocks outperforming the benchmark indices.
The Sensex settled at 73,598.87, declining 8.08 points, or 0.01 per cent. The Nifty 50 closed at 22,749.75, down 3.45 points, or 0.02 per cent.
Despite the marginal losses in the frontline indices, the rally in broader markets indicated positive investor sentiment towards select stocks and sectors.
Midcap and Smallcap Stocks Outperform
Broader market indices recorded significant gains during the session. The Nifty Midcap 100 advanced 1 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 surged 2.70 per cent, outperforming the benchmark indices.
Sectoral performance remained mixed. Private banking and financial services stocks faced selling pressure and emerged as the major laggards. In contrast, media, real estate and pharmaceutical stocks attracted buying interest, with their respective sectoral indices gaining between 2 and 3 per cent.
Top Gainers and Losers on Sensex
Among the Sensex constituents, Bharti Airtel, Trent, Maruti Suzuki, Power Grid Corporation and Eternal emerged as the leading gainers.
On the other hand, State Bank of India (SBI), Axis Bank, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Asian Paints and HDFC Bank featured among the major losers.
The divergent performance of banking stocks and other sectors contributed to the largely flat closing of the benchmark indices.
Nifty Technical Outlook: 22,800 Is the Key Resistance
Market analysts said the Nifty managed to close above its 20-day moving average (20 DMA) and 200-week moving average (200 WMA) on the daily chart after briefly slipping below these important technical levels. The recovery suggested buying support at lower levels.
However, selling pressure remained visible around the 22,800 resistance zone, limiting the index’s upward movement.
According to market watchers, the short-term outlook remains sideways to mildly positive, with traders advised to monitor key technical levels.
On the downside, 22,600 is the immediate support level, while 22,800 remains the crucial resistance. A sustained breakout above 22,800 could pave the way for the Nifty to test the 23,000 mark.
Analysts have recommended a level-based trading strategy amid the mixed market signals.
Earnings, Crude Oil and Global Developments in Focus
Going forward, market direction is expected to depend on several domestic and international factors. The resilience of corporate earnings, movements in crude oil prices, developments in the West Asia crisis and signals from the US Federal Reserve regarding monetary policy are likely to influence investor sentiment.
Investors will also monitor sectoral trends and broader market performance for further cues as benchmark indices attempt to establish a clearer direction.
