

Hyderabad June 30: Swiggy, the popular online food ordering and delivery platform, has unveiled some fascinating statistics about Indians’ love for biryani. According to their analysis of orders placed from January 2023 to June 15, 2023, Indians have ordered a staggering 76 million biryani dishes, equivalent to 7.6 crore, in the past year alone. This showcases the immense popularity of this flavorful rice dish among the Indian populace.


During the last five and a half months, there has been an 8.26 percent growth in biryani orders compared to the same period in 2022, demonstrating the increasing affinity for this culinary delight. Swiggy offers biryani from a whopping 2.6 lakh restaurants, with an impressive 28 thousand of them specializing in this delectable dish. From the aromatic Lucknowi Biryani to the spicy Hyderabadi Dum Biryani, the flavorful Kolkata Biryani to the fragrant Malabar Biryani, people across the country are ordering biryani at a rate of 219 orders per minute.
Swiggy’s analysis also highlighted the cities with the highest number of biryani-serving restaurants. Bengaluru emerged as the city with the most biryani-serving establishments, boasting 24,000 restaurants. Mumbai followed closely with over 22,000 restaurants, and Delhi with more than 20,000 restaurants specializing in biryani.

Interestingly, when it comes to biryani consumption, Hyderabad leads the pack with a staggering 7.2 million orders recorded until June this year. Bengaluru secured second place with nearly 5 million orders, while Chennai clinched the third spot with close to 3 million orders.
The data further reveals that Dum Biryani is the most popular choice, with over 6.2 million orders and approximately 85 variants. Biryani Rice follows closely behind with 3.5 million orders, while Hyderabadi Biryani has received over 2.8 million orders. Notably, a biryani enthusiast from Chennai set a new record by spending a remarkable Rs. 31,532 on a single order of biryani.

The love for biryani among Indians is undeniable, and with its wide variety of flavors and regional variations, it continues to captivate the taste buds of millions across the country. As International Biryani Day approaches on July 02, Swiggy’s revealing statistics serve as a testament to the enduring popularity of this beloved dish.
