Hyderabad Leads the Way: Aiming for 100% Sewage Treatment by September 2023

Hyderabad, July 2, 2023

In a pioneering move, Hyderabad is set to become the first major city in India to achieve 100% sewage treatment by September 2023. In line with this ambitious objective, a comprehensive plan has been initiated to construct multiple Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) across the city, with a total capacity of 1259.50 Million Liters per Day (MLD), amounting to an investment of ₹3,866 Crore.

Today marks a significant milestone in this journey as the first STP, located in Kokapet, is inaugurated with a capacity of 15 MLD. The remaining STPs, currently under construction, will be operational in the coming months, further strengthening the city’s sewage treatment infrastructure.

This groundbreaking initiative underscores Hyderabad’s commitment to addressing its wastewater management challenges. By treating sewage at such an extensive scale, the city aims to minimize the environmental impact and ensure the well-being of its residents. The treated water will be utilized for various purposes, including irrigation, industrial use, and groundwater replenishment, promoting sustainable practices and reducing reliance on freshwater resources.

The comprehensive plan to treat 100% of the city’s sewage is a testament to Hyderabad’s progressive vision and determination to lead the way in urban sustainability. This achievement will not only enhance the quality of life for residents but also serve as a model for other cities in India and beyond.

The successful implementation of this ambitious project would not have been possible without the combined efforts of various stakeholders, including government agencies, engineers, contractors, and citizens. Their collective dedication and commitment to environmental preservation have paved the way for Hyderabad’s remarkable feat.

As Hyderabad marches toward its goal of treating 100% of its sewage, the city sets an inspiring example for others to follow. By embracing sustainable practices and prioritizing wastewater management, Hyderabad charts a path toward a greener and more livable future.
