Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge took a strong stance against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence regarding the violence in Manipur, particularly in the wake of a distressing incident where two women were paraded naked. Kharge accused the Centre and BJP of transforming democracy and the rule of law into “mobocracy.”

In a detailed Twitter post, Kharge expressed his deep concern, stating, “Humanity has died in Manipur. Modi govt and the BJP have changed democracy and the rule of law into Mobocracy by destroying the delicate social fabric of the state.”

Addressing the Prime Minister directly, he urged Modi to break his silence and speak about the situation in Parliament, taking responsibility for the deteriorating conditions in Manipur. Kharge further demanded that the government refrain from blaming others for the situation and instead provide a transparent account of the events.

Kharge’s remarks came to light after videos of the incident on May 4 surfaced on social media, showing the women being paraded naked by a violent mob in Manipur. According to the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), the women were also subjected to gang rape in a paddy field.

The incident took place amid widespread ethnic violence in the northeastern state, which has resulted in numerous casualties and forced thousands of people to flee their homes.

Several opposition MPs, on Thursday, submitted a motion to discuss the Manipur situation during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. The Congress has strongly criticized the Central government over the horrifying videos and demanded the immediate removal of the Chief Minister for failing to control the situation in Manipur effectively.
