Asian Games Debut for Record-Breaking Jyoti Yarraji
Hangzhou, September 25: Jyothi Yarraji, the trailblazing national record holder in women’s 100m hurdles, is set to make her Asian Games debut in Hangzhou. She has etched her name in history as the first Indian woman to complete the 100m hurdles in under 13 seconds.
In a stellar season, the 24-year-old sensation from Visakhapatnam clinched the gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok. Adding to her accolades, she also secured the silver in the 200m event at the same prestigious tournament, and she’s poised to compete in both categories once again in China.
Jyothi, honing her skills under the tutelage of coach James Hillier at the Reliance Foundation for the past few years, achieved her personal best in the 100m hurdles with a blazing time of 12.78 seconds during the World University Games held in Chengdu just last month.
While her World Championships debut in Budapest saw her clocking 13.05 seconds, falling short of advancing past the heats, she is now considered a strong contender for the coveted gold medal in the 100m hurdles event at the upcoming Asian Games.

Jyothi Yarraji’s remarkable journey from humble beginnings to gold medal glory at the Asian Athletics Championship not only brings pride to her family but also serves as an inspiration to all. Overcoming the challenges of poverty, she embodies the power of perseverance, demonstrating that with determination and hard work, one can rise above adversity and reach for the stars.
