In a strategic move, X Corp is gearing up to introduce audio and video calls, available exclusively to premium, subscription-based users. This development aligns with the platform’s transition into an “everything app,” as confirmed by X CEO Linda Yaccarino in a recent announcement.
Renowned tech veteran turned investor, Chris Messina, recently unveiled new code within the X app, indicating support for audio and video calls. Users will have the capability to engage in these calls with other Verified users they follow or contacts in their address book.
As Messina noted on X rival Threads, “As hinted in Linda’s sizzle reel, X will be adding audio and video calls shortly. You will, of course, have to pay for that feature, because Skype is dead.”
The feature’s description emphasizes, “Take messaging to the next level with audio and video calls,” offering users the option to activate the feature and select their preferred contacts for communication.
Linda Yaccarino, X Corp CEO, previously mentioned that the company is on the brink of reaching a break-even point, following significant changes, including substantial layoffs and platform adjustments in recent months.
During her first television interview since assuming the role of X Corp CEO, Yaccarino revealed the imminent arrival of video calls on the platform, echoing the aspiration to transform X into an “everything app” akin to China’s WeChat.
“I’ve been at the company for eight weeks. The operational run rate right now… we’re pretty close to break even,” she affirmed.
Furthermore, Yaccarino disclosed that soon, users “will be able to make video chat calls without having to give your phone number to anyone on the platform.” She also hinted at forthcoming features, such as long-form videos, creator subscriptions, and plans related to digital payments.
This strategic move mirrors Elon Musk’s vision for Twitter, aiming to evolve it into “an everything app,” drawing parallels to China’s versatile WeChat platform.
