New Delhi, October 6: Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi expressed his gratitude to the Indian Railways for their decision to increase the wages of porters nationwide.
In a statement, Gandhi said, “It is heartening to see that the Indian Railways and the government have heeded the voices of my fellow ‘coolie’ brethren.”
Gandhi’s appreciation comes in the wake of a recent order from Northern Railways, dated September 26, which announced revised rates for porters at various stations within its zones.
Under the updated pricing structure, individuals will now be required to pay Rs 140, up from Rs 100, for the service of porters carrying up to 40 kg of luggage for a duration of 20 minutes at stations categorized as “A list stations.” For “B list stations,” the rate has increased from Rs 70 to Rs 100 for the same service, reflecting a hike of Rs 30.
This revision in porter wages marks the first such adjustment in seven years and is set to benefit porters at railway stations across the country, with various zones adopting the updated rates.
Rahul Gandhi’s involvement in advocating for porter rights became apparent when he visited Anand Vihar railway station on September 21. During his visit, he wore the distinctive red shirt of the porters and engaged in conversations with them, attentively listening to their concerns and demands.
A video of his interaction with the porters, where they called for wage revisions, insurance coverage, and pension benefits, was shared later.
This move to increase wages for porters by the Indian Railways is expected to be a significant step towards improving the livelihoods of these hardworking individuals.
