10th Deccan Haat Showcases Rich Tapestry of Indian Handlooms and Handicrafts

Hyderabad, December 27, 2023 – The 10th edition of Deccan Haat, a vibrant exhibition and sale featuring handlooms and handicrafts, was inaugurated by Roopa Maganti, Social Entrepreneur & Co-Founder of Greentatwa, under the auspices of NABARD Telangana. The event, graced by notable personalities including Suseela Chintala, Chief General Manager, NABARD, Suchitra Sinha, ex-IAS, B Padmavathi, Vice President ALEAP, and K V S Prasad, GM, NABARD Andhra Pradesh, is scheduled from 23rd to 31st December 2023 at Kamma Sangham Exhibition Hall, Ameerpet Main Road, Hyderabad.

More than 110 skilled artisans from 25 states have converged to showcase their diverse array of products, including handloom sarees, dress materials, food items, and various art and craft creations. Welcoming the esteemed dignitaries, Suseela Chintala highlighted the significance of Deccan Haat, an annual event since 2014, as it marks the first decade for NABARD. Despite challenges, the exhibition has consistently witnessed success, with an average sale of ₹60 lakh in the past nine editions.

Chintala emphasized the vital role of handlooms and handicrafts in preserving India’s cultural heritage and providing employment. She mentioned NABARD’s ongoing support for exhibitions across the country and the convergence of efforts with government initiatives to promote Indian Handicraft and Handloom, including GI tagged products.

Addressing the participants, K V S Prasad, GM, NABARD, outlined the organization’s initiatives to promote rural entrepreneurship through skill development programs. He expressed hope that Deccan Haat would serve as a platform for artisans and weavers to understand market needs, fostering opportunities for sales and bulk orders.

B Padmavathi from ALEAP praised NABARD’s efforts in organizing exhibitions that showcase India’s treasured art and craft, underscoring their enduring value. She conveyed her wishes for a successful sale for all participating artisans.

Suchitra Sinha, ex IAS, shared her happiness in being part of the inaugural function and highlighted her organization’s work with vulnerable tribal groups in Jharkhand, transforming them into skilled artisans gaining recognition.

As the Chief Guest, Roopa Maganti, Co-Founder of Greentatva, lauded the backbone of the Indian economy, consisting of farming and art & craft. She commended NABARD’s efforts in sustaining and contributing to rural development, encouraging artisans to adapt to changing consumer preferences and bring forth innovative designs.

The Deccan Haat, running until December 31, 2023, promises a delightful experience for visitors with its diverse offerings from 25 states, showcasing the rich tapestry of India’s handlooms and handicrafts.
