Central Government Extends Ban on SIMI for Five More Years

New Delhi, Jan 29 – The Central government announced on Monday the extension of the ban on the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) for an additional five years, declaring it an ‘unlawful association’.

The Ministry of Home Affairs stated that the ban on SIMI has been enforced under Section 3(1) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) 1967 through Gazette Notification Number S.O. 564(E), dated January 31, 2019.

Highlighting the rationale behind the decision, the ministry emphasized SIMI’s continued involvement in activities that foster terrorism, disrupt peace, and undermine communal harmony, posing a threat to India’s sovereignty, security, and integrity.

Numerous criminal cases have been registered against SIMI and its members under various sections of the law, including the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
