“Tata Power’s Tariff Hike Proposal Sparks Concerns: Mumbai Faces Soaring Electricity Rates

In a recent move, Tata Power has suggested a tariff “rationalization” that could lead to a substantial increase in power rates, particularly impacting lower-end consumers. The utility’s proposal, outlined in newspaper advertisements on January 29, proposes raising the per-unit rate to Rs 7.37 from the current Rs 3.74 for subscribers consuming up to 100 units per month. For those using between 101-300 units, the proposed increase is from Rs 5.89 to Rs 9.31 per unit.

Highlighting the privatization of electricity in Mumbai, where major players like Tata and Adani dominate the sector, the tariff adjustments have raised concerns. The proposed hike for consumers using up to 100 units underscores the potential burden on citizens, signaling the profit-driven motives of private companies. Critics argue that such moves prioritize profits over the welfare of the general public and the city’s developmental needs.”
