CM MK Stalin Unites TN Parties Against ‘Unjust’ Delimitation, Proposes Joint Action Committee

Chennai, March 05, 2025: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin led an all-party meeting on Tuesday, where parties unanimously opposed the proposed parliamentary constituency delimitation based on population. The meeting strongly condemned the move, stating that it threatens India’s federal structure and unfairly reduces the political representation of Tamil Nadu and other southern states.

Key Resolutions from the Meeting:

  1. Opposition to Population-Based Delimitation: The meeting rejected the idea of determining parliamentary constituencies solely based on population, arguing that it penalizes southern states for successfully implementing population control measures over the past decades.
  2. Honoring the 2000 Prime Minister’s Assurance: The leaders recalled that in 2000, the then-Prime Minister assured that parliamentary constituencies would continue to be determined based on 1971 population figures to encourage nationwide adoption of population control policies. They urged the current Prime Minister to reaffirm this commitment in Parliament and extend this framework for another 30 years.
  3. Constituency Increase Without Disproportionate Loss: If the number of Lok Sabha seats is increased, the existing proportion of constituencies among states—based on 1971 population figures—must be maintained. The Union government should pass constitutional amendments to ensure a fair and proportionate increase in constituencies for Tamil Nadu and other southern states.
  4. Fair Representation, Not Punishment: The meeting emphasized that Tamil Nadu is not against delimitation, but the process should not punish states that have effectively implemented welfare and population control programs over the last fifty years.
  5. Formation of a Joint Action Committee (JAC): To coordinate efforts, raise public awareness, and build nationwide consensus, the meeting decided to form a Joint Action Committee (JAC). This committee will include representatives from Tamil Nadu’s political parties and Members of Parliament from other southern states. A formal invitation will be sent to relevant southern parties to join this collective initiative.

The resolutions passed in the meeting highlight Tamil Nadu’s minimum demands and set the stage for a broader political movement against what leaders describe as an “unjust” delimitation process.
