KGMU Receives Rs 2 Crore Allocation for Diabetic Retinopathy Treatment
Lucknow, Feb 12: King George’s Medical University (KGMU) is set to enhance its capabilities in combating diabetic retinopathy, thanks to a generous allocation of Rs 2 crore by the Uttar Pradesh government.
The renowned medical institution will utilize the funding to acquire cutting-edge machines and services aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of this eye condition.
Among the planned acquisitions are a wide-angle imaging system and feco emulsification services, both of which are essential for advanced diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy.
Diabetic retinopathy, stemming from damage to the retina’s blood vessels due to uncontrolled blood sugar levels, poses a significant threat to vision health. With close to 4 lakh people affected in Uttar Pradesh alone, the need for accessible and effective treatment is paramount.
The KGMU diabetic retinopathy centre, launched in 2021 with an initial investment of Rs 2 crore, has been diligently serving patients, with up to 60 individuals receiving treatment daily. Equipped with advanced facilities such as a green laser photocoagulation machine, digital vitrectomy, and optical coherence tomography, the centre has been at the forefront of combating this debilitating condition.
Vice-chancellor Professor Sonia Nityanand expressed gratitude for the allocation, emphasizing its potential to make a significant impact on patient care. The funding will enable the centre to offer specialized treatment and comprehensive care for diabetic retinopathy patients, making quality healthcare more accessible to a larger segment of the population.
The move underscores Uttar Pradesh’s commitment to addressing preventable blindness caused by diabetic retinopathy, marking a significant step forward in ensuring better eye health outcomes for its citizens.
