DGHS Clarifies Concerns on Human Metapneumovirus in China, Assures Public of Safety
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) of India has addressed public concerns over reports of a new virus in China, which has led to a spike in hospital visits there. Media reports highlighting public anxiety in China have attracted global attention. However, Indian authorities have assured that there is no immediate reason for alarm.
Dr. Atul Goel, a senior DGHS official, clarified that the virus, identified as Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV), primarily causes mild respiratory symptoms and does not warrant panic. He emphasized that hMPV, similar to other respiratory viruses, affects children and the elderly the most, presenting symptoms akin to the common flu.
Speaking on India’s preparedness, Dr. Goel confirmed that the DGHS has analyzed data on respiratory infections up to December and found no significant or alarming trends. He noted that a seasonal rise in respiratory cases during winter is expected, and hospitals across the country have been advised to ensure adequate facilities and resources are available.
To mitigate the spread of respiratory infections, Dr. Goel urged the public to follow basic preventive measures:
- Avoid close contact with individuals showing symptoms of cough or cold.
- Cover your mouth while coughing or sneezing.
- Seek appropriate medication for common cold or fever.
“While the reports from China are concerning, there is no need for unnecessary fear. Maintaining hygiene and adhering to preventive measures will help curb the spread of infections,” he added.
As global health authorities monitor the situation closely, DGHS reassures Indian citizens that precautionary measures are sufficient to address any potential risks.
