Guwahati, Feb 13: Assam government officially designated ‘Kaji Nemu’ (Citrus Lemon) as the state fruit during Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting, announced Assam Agricultural Minister Atul Bora in the State Assembly.
Highlighting the distinctive scent and medicinal properties of ‘Kaji Nemu,’ Bora noted that the fruit holds a Geographical Indication (GI) label and is renowned for its unique characteristics.
Bora further informed that commercial cultivation of ‘Kaji Nemu’ is underway, with plantations covering 15.90 hectares of land yielding 1.58 metric tonnes of produce. Over the past two years, the fruit has been exported to various countries.
Expressing pride in the decision, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the significance of ‘Kaji Nemu’ in enriching local cuisines with its aroma and antioxidant properties.
Sarma added that the declaration of ‘Kaji Nemu’ as the State Fruit of Assam would elevate its prominence on the global fruit map, contributing to enhanced self-sufficiency and production.
