The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has completed two successful flight tests of the Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile on Wednesday and Thursday.

Conducted from a ground-based portable launcher at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha, the tests targeted high-speed unmanned aerial targets across various interception scenarios. The missiles effectively intercepted and destroyed the targets, achieving all mission objectives.

The Ministry of Defence revealed that VSHORADS, a Man Portable Air Defence System (MANPAD), is an indigenous creation developed by the Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in collaboration with other DRDO labs and Indian industry partners.

Featuring cutting-edge technologies like miniaturised Reaction Control System (RCS) and integrated avionics, the VSHORADS missile demonstrated its prowess during the tests.

Propelled by a dual thrust solid motor, the missile is tailored to neutralise low-altitude aerial threats at short ranges, with its design and launcher optimized for easy portability.

The flight tests were observed by officials from the Indian Army, senior scientists from various DRDO labs, and industry partners.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commended DRDO, the Indian Army, and industry stakeholders for the successful development trials, emphasizing the technological advancement this missile brings to the armed forces.

DRDO Chairman Samir V. Kamat extended congratulations to the entire team involved in the missile’s design and development.
