New Delhi, March 20: Zomato Co-founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal announced on Wednesday the removal of on-ground segregation of its rider fleet following backlash over the introduction of a ‘pure veg mode.’

Initially, the ‘pure veg mode’ entailed riders wearing green uniforms instead of Zomato’s signature red color. However, Goyal stated, “We have decided to remove the on-ground segregation of this fleet using the color green. All our riders will wear the color red.”

Despite the removal of visual distinctions, the app will still indicate the use of a separate fleet for vegetarian orders.

Goyal emphasized the importance of rider safety, stating, “This will ensure that our red uniform delivery partners are not incorrectly associated with non-veg food and blocked by any RWAs or societies during any special days.”

The decision comes after Goyal’s earlier clarification that significant negative social repercussions would prompt a reversal of the decision. Concerns were raised about potential issues faced by customers with landlords due to their dietary preferences.

The ‘pure veg mode’ on Zomato’s platform offers a selection of restaurants exclusively serving vegetarian food, excluding those offering non-vegetarian items.
