The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning regarding the upcoming summer season, forecasting longer heatwaves and high temperatures across the country.
According to IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mahapatra, the scorching sun is expected to prevail this summer, with temperatures soaring above normal levels in many regions. The IMD predicts that the heatwave conditions will intensify from the end of April until the conclusion of the general elections, spanning approximately two and a half months.
Union Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju has urged all stakeholders involved in the Lok Sabha elections to remain vigilant and adequately prepared for the impending weather conditions.
Mr. Mahapatra highlighted that Central India and South India are likely to experience hotter-than-normal temperatures, accompanied by strong hot winds throughout April. Additionally, certain regions such as the Western Himalayan region, North Eastern states, and North Odisha may also witness above-normal temperatures.
Furthermore, the IMD anticipates a heightened risk of hailstorms in many parts of the plains, with hot winds persisting for 10 to 20 days across various regions of the country.
Specifically, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Maharashtra, North Karnataka, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and North Chhattisgarh are expected to be more severely affected by the heatwave conditions. These regions may also experience above-normal temperatures throughout April.
In contrast, normal temperature levels are anticipated in the Himalayan region, North Eastern states, and Odisha.
The IMD’s warning underscores the importance of preparedness and caution among citizens and authorities alike as India braces for a challenging summer ahead.
