A real estate broker in New York owes his life to his Apple Watch after a harrowing bike accident last month. Eric Zollinger, navigating heavy rain, encountered a pothole filled with floodwater, causing him to tumble off his bike and sustain injuries to his face, nose, and knee. Despite managing to ride home, Zollinger later slipped in his bathroom, triggering the watch’s built-in fall detection feature.
The watch promptly dialed 911, connecting Zollinger to emergency services. “We have been doing it since 911. What is your emergency?” Zollinger recounted hearing before receiving assistance and being transported to a local hospital, where scans revealed no fractures. Grateful for his Apple Watch, Zollinger emphasized its life-saving capabilities, stating, “I can’t even imagine what things would have been like if the watch hadn’t alerted me. I owe it to my Apple Watch. It is a very smart watch.”
This incident adds to the growing list of lives saved by smartwatches. Last year in the UK, Hockey Wales CEO Paul Wapman was rescued by his Apple Watch after suffering a heart attack while jogging. The watch’s motion detection feature immediately alerted emergency contacts, facilitating swift medical attention. Smartwatches continue to prove invaluable in emergencies, showcasing their potential to safeguard users’ well-being.
