Farmers’ Alliance in Telangana Rallies Against BJP Ahead of Elections
Hyderabad, May 6, 2024
In a fervent display of solidarity, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) convened a press conference at the Somajiguda Press Club in Hyderabad today. National leaders and state convenors gathered to rally the people of Telangana against the BJP government’s failure to fulfill promises to farmers ahead of the upcoming Parliamentary elections on May 13.
Leaders from across India, including Dr. Vijoo Krishnan, Dr. Sunilam, Suresh Raut, Avtar Singh Mehma, K Balakrishnan, Badagala Nagendra, Ravi Kiran Puncha, Arun Kumar, and Rayala Chandrasekhar, joined the event. They voiced concern over the alarming rate of farmer suicides during the BJP’s tenure and accused the government of prioritizing corporate interests over farmers’ welfare.

The leaders reiterated the ongoing protests against the three agricultural laws and the electricity amendment bill, which resulted in the loss of 750 lives. Despite assurances to withdraw the anti-farmer laws and address concerns regarding MSP Guarantee, the Modi government has failed to act, leaving farmers disillusioned.
Issues such as the unfulfilled promise to double farmers’ income by 2022, neglect of the Minimum Support Price Act, and violations of environmental and forest conservation laws were highlighted. State leaders echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the government’s targeting of intellectuals and journalists who support farmers’ rights.

SKM urged Telangana farmers to reject the BJP’s religious propaganda and unite against its anti-farmer policies. In preparation for the elections, SKM, along with local organizations, will conduct awareness campaigns across districts from May 6 to 11.
The event saw participation from Professor Aribandi Prasad Rao and others.
