India’s campaign at the 2024 Australian Open badminton championship ended in disappointment as all players were ousted in the quarterfinals. The BWF World Tour Super 500 series event, held at the Quaycentre, saw India’s top shuttlers H.S Prannoy, Sameer Verma, and Aakarshi Kashyap, along with the mixed doubles pair of B. Sumeeth Reddy and N. Sikki Reddy, fall short against their formidable opponents.
H.S Prannoy’s Defeat
Fifth-seeded H.S Prannoy faced Japan’s Kodai Naraoka, ranked sixth in the world, and succumbed to a 21-19, 21-13 defeat in a 61-minute battle. Despite a strong start, Prannoy couldn’t sustain his momentum against Naraoka.
Sameer Verma’s Loss
Sameer Verma, who earlier stunned former world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore, was unable to continue his winning streak. He lost to world No. 17 Lin Chun-Yi of Chinese Taipei with scores of 21-12, 21-13 in the quarterfinals.
Aakarshi Kashyap’s Exit
In the women’s singles, eighth-seeded Aakarshi Kashyap faced a tough opponent in third-seeded Pai Yu-Po of Chinese Taipei. Aakarshi was defeated 21-17, 21-12, marking the end of her journey at the tournament.
Mixed Doubles Pair Falls Short
The mixed doubles pair of B. Sumeeth Reddy and N. Sikki Reddy faced the top-seeded Chinese duo Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin. The Indian pair lost 21-12, 21-14, concluding their run in the championship.
The Australian Open 2024, with a prize fund of USD 420,000, highlighted the fierce competition among the world’s best shuttlers. Despite the setbacks, the Indian players showcased their skill and determination throughout the tournament.
