Major opposition parties in India have written a joint letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing concern over the alleged misuse of central agencies against opposition leaders. The letter, signed by leaders of parties including the Aam Aadmi Party, Trinamool Congress, and Nationalist Congress Party & Bharata Rashtra Samithi claims that the arrest of Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia by the Central Bureau of Investigation was politically motivated and baseless. The parties also allege that the investigation agencies have been targeting opposition leaders while going slow on cases against those who join the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. The letter further criticizes the role of Governors across the country, accusing them of frequently hindering the governance of non-BJP states and threatening the spirit of cooperative federalism. The opposition leaders have called for respect for the mandate given by the people and an end to the use of central agencies and constitutional offices to settle scores outside of the electoral battlefield.
