Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised newly elected Speaker Om Birla for his strong condemnation of the Emergency (1975-1977) during his inaugural speech in the 18th Lok Sabha. PM Modi commended Birla for highlighting the atrocities committed during that period and acknowledging how democracy was suppressed.
“I am pleased that the Honourable Speaker unequivocally denounced the Emergency, emphasized the abuses that took place during that era, and paid tribute with a moment of silence to all those who suffered during those challenging times,” PM Modi stated.
During his maiden address in the 18th Lok Sabha, Om Birla invoked the “dark days” of the Emergency and called for a two-minute silence to reflect on this “black chapter” in Indian democracy, which sparked protests from opposition members.
June 25, 2024, marked the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, imposed by the Congress-led government under Indira Gandhi. This period was characterized by severe curtailment of citizens’ fundamental rights, suppression of dissent, and disregard for constitutional norms.
PM Modi emphasized the importance of educating today’s youth about the Emergency to illustrate the dangers of authoritarian rule. “Although the Emergency occurred half a century ago, it remains crucial for today’s youth to understand its lessons, as it serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of trampling over constitutional values, stifling public opinion, and undermining institutions,” PM Modi emphasized.
He concluded by noting that the events of the Emergency serve as a poignant example of what dictatorship entails, underscoring the need for vigilance to safeguard democratic principles and institutions in India.
