Kerala High Court Justice P. Somarajan Bids Adieu After 35 Years of Distinguished Service

Justice P. Somarajan, a respected figure in the Kerala High Court, officially retired on Saturday, marking the end of an illustrious legal career spanning over 35 years.

Justice Somarajan is celebrated for his record-breaking efficiency in case disposal. During his farewell speech, he highlighted his commitment to resolving longstanding cases, stating, “I had ensured speedy disposal of all old civil appeals including second appeals ranging from 10 to 65 years old during my tenure.”

Career Milestones

Justice Somarajan began his legal journey in 1988 as a lawyer. By 2001, he had ascended to the position of District & Sessions Judge at the Additional District Court in Palakkad. His tenure was marked by a remarkable accomplishment: “I have the enviable distinction of a record disposal of second appeals in India. During my tenure, I can say with pride that I have accomplished a landmark record of the disposal of second civil appeals within a short span of one year and three months,” he noted.

In 2016, Justice Somarajan’s dedication and expertise earned him elevation to Additional Judge of the Kerala High Court. He was confirmed as a permanent judge in March 2018. His tenure is remembered for not just the volume but the significance of the cases he resolved. “I have also disposed of some of the cases which were filed even before my birth,” he remarked, showcasing the extent of his efforts to clear longstanding legal backlogs.

Recognition and Legacy

Despite his monumental achievements, Justice Somarajan maintained a humble outlook, emphasizing duty over recognition. “These cases didn’t get much recognition in the media. However, I see it as part of one’s duty, carried out without expecting any applause,” he stated.

Acting Kerala Chief Justice A. Mohammed Mustaque praised Justice Somarajan, describing him as “one of the finest gentlemen” whose career was characterized by integrity, impartiality, and an unwavering dedication to justice.

Justice Somarajan’s retirement marks the end of a significant chapter in the Kerala High Court’s history. His contributions have set a high standard for judicial efficiency and integrity, leaving an enduring legacy for future generations of the judiciary.
