The Ad-Hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has granted a three-day extension for the Sole Arbitrator to announce her verdict in the appeal filed by Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat. Phogat had been disqualified by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and United World Wrestling (UWW) from the women’s 50 kg freestyle final at the Paris Olympics for being 100 grams overweight during the second-day weigh-in.
The verdict, initially expected earlier, will now be announced on August 16, 2024, at 9:30 IST.
“The CAS ad hoc division president has allowed Dr. Annabelle Bennett, Sole Arbitrator in the Vinesh Phogat vs. United World Wrestling (UWW) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) matter, an extension until 6:00 pm (Paris time) on Friday, August 16, 2024,” the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) stated in a press release on Tuesday.
Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification has sparked significant controversy, leading to her appeal to the CAS. The extension allows additional time for a thorough review before the final decision is made.
The wrestling community and fans across India are eagerly awaiting the outcome, which will determine whether Phogat’s appeal is successful or if the disqualification stands.
