Telangana Ministers and MP Visit Seoul, Draw Inspiration from Cheonggyecheon Stream for Musi River Development

During a recent visit to Seoul, South Korea, Telangana’s Bhuvanagiri MP Chamala Kirankumar Reddy, along with Ministers Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and Ponnam Prabhakar, toured the iconic Cheonggyecheon stream, which has become a model of urban river revitalization. The delegation expressed their enthusiasm for adopting a similar approach to rejuvenate Hyderabad’s Musi River.

While standing near the Cheonggyecheon stream, MP Kirankumar Reddy shared insights into how the Telangana government, led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, plans to transform the Musi River. The ministers echoed these sentiments, stating that the government is eager to implement a development model inspired by Seoul’s successful urban renewal project.

The ministers highlighted that the state government’s earlier plan, which involved the demolition of 10,000 structures within the buffer zone of the Musi, has now expanded to include a kilometer-wide development on both sides of the river. The Musi River redevelopment project will see the removal of structures in the riverbed and buffer zone, with water from the Godavari River diverted into Musi.

The Telangana government aims to construct elevated corridors, roads, bridges, and metro rail infrastructure along the river, spanning 110 square kilometers on both sides of Musi. This area will be leased to private companies under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with companies developing commercial and entertainment facilities on the leased land for a period of 30 to 50 years. In return, these companies will provide the government with annual payments as part of the agreement.

The ministers also confirmed that the Meinhart Consortium has been tasked with overseeing the finalization of project procedures. They emphasized that the PPP model will ensure that both private companies and the public benefit from the transformation of the Musi River area.

The delegation’s visit to Seoul underlined the Telangana government’s commitment to modernizing Hyderabad, taking inspiration from one of the world’s most renowned urban river projects.
