Empowering Farmers Through Chrysanthemum Cultivation: A Day of Learning and Innovation

At the picturesque Floriculture Research Station in Rajendranagar, Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University (SKLTHU) came alive on December 10, 2024, with the vibrant hues of over 110 chrysanthemum varieties on display. The occasion was Chrysanthemum Day 2024, an event designed to inspire and educate rural farmers, particularly women and youth, on the profitable cultivation and management of this cherished flower.

The event was inaugurated by Dr. Danda Raji Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of SKLTHU, and graced by Smt. S.K. Yasmeen Basha, IAS, Director of Horticulture and Sericulture, Government of Telangana. Farmers, scientists, and students gathered in an atmosphere buzzing with the exchange of ideas, practical demonstrations, and shared aspirations.

Speaking to the assembled audience, Dr. Raji Reddy highlighted the challenges of managing perishable horticultural produce and the critical need for post-harvest innovation. “Setting up small cold storage units and cooperative field distillation systems can revolutionize how we market and preserve horticultural products,” he stressed. He also encouraged farmers to adopt integrated farming practices that combine agriculture and horticulture to increase profitability.

To further empower farmers, the Vice-Chancellor announced plans to launch short-term certificate programmes on dry flower technology, aimed at teaching value addition and processing techniques. “These initiatives will not only enhance income but also open new avenues for entrepreneurial growth among youth and women,” he added.

The event’s Chief Guest, Smt. Yasmeen Basha, shed light on the government’s efforts to strengthen the horticulture sector. She emphasized the importance of providing genuine planting materials, establishing district-level cold storage facilities, and improving market yards. She also reiterated the potential of value addition, such as dry flower technology, in boosting farmers’ incomes and generating profits.

The event was not merely an exhibition but a hands-on experience for the participants. Farmers walked through the chrysanthemum fields, gaining firsthand knowledge of cultivation techniques. Among them, women farmers took a keen interest, recognizing the potential of these flowers to transform their livelihoods.

The day also saw the participation of SKLTHU’s leadership team, including Dr. A. Bhagawan (Registrar), Dr. D. Lakshminarayan (Director of Research), and Dr. D. Vijaya (Director of Extension), along with scientists, zonal heads, and representatives from the Department of Horticulture, such as Smt. Ramalakshmi and Sri Sathar.

As the sun set over Rajendranagar, Chrysanthemum Day 2024 left an indelible mark, igniting hope and determination among the farming community. It was a celebration of flowers, knowledge, and the collective will to transform horticulture into a thriving, sustainable industry for Telangana.
