CWC Approves CM Revanth Reddy’s Proposal for Caste Census

Belgaon, December 26, 2024: The Congress Working Committee (CWC) has unanimously approved Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s proposal to include caste data in the upcoming national census. Speaking at the CWC meeting, Revanth Reddy emphasized the strategic importance of a caste-based census and its potential impact on the political landscape of the country.

Highlighting the possibility of a re-division of parliamentary constituencies based on population, Reddy cautioned that southern states could face a reduction in their representation. He urged the Congress party and the All India Congress Committee (AICC) to act strategically to ensure no state is disadvantaged in the process.

Reddy also stressed the need for a robust campaign on the Women’s Reservation Bill, introduced during the Congress Party’s tenure, noting the importance of addressing reservations proposed by the BJP in their version of the bill.

The Chief Minister pointed to Telangana’s caste census as a pioneering model for the nation. He stated that the Congress government in Telangana has prioritized the caste census, with 90% of the survey already completed using a comprehensive and inclusive methodology.

TPCC President Mahesh Kumar Goud recalled that a century ago, the same Bellam hosted the CWC session that elected Mahatma Gandhi as AICC President. He remarked that the Telangana caste census reflects the ideals of Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, aiming to create revolutionary changes in the country’s social fabric.

Goud criticized the BJP for its alleged divisive politics and attempts to rewrite the Constitution and history. He called the caste census a “slap in the face” to such tactics, underlining its role in uniting the country against discrimination and exploitation.

The Congress Party has demanded that the central government conduct a nationwide caste census, asserting its potential to serve as a foundation for equitable policymaking and representation.

The CWC has resolved to send a formal recommendation to the central government, marking a significant step in the Congress Party’s commitment to inclusive governance and social justice.
