New Delhi, January 26: Rising Indian batter Tilak Varma has credited T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav for significantly shaping his career by promoting him to the number three position in the batting order.

Tilak, who debuted in August 2023, has emerged as one of India’s most promising young talents in the T20 format. His breakthrough came during the South Africa tour, where he scored consecutive centuries after being elevated to the crucial number three spot.

However, his standout performance came in Chennai, where he played a match-winning knock of 72 not out in a tense chase of 166 against England. Tilak’s stats as a number three batter now stand at an impressive 419 runs in 11 innings, boasting an average of 69.83 and a blistering strike rate of 171.02.

Tilak’s Praise for Suryakumar Yadav

Speaking to Star Sports, Tilak expressed gratitude to Suryakumar for trusting him with the key batting position.

“When Surya bhai gave me that No.3 position in South Africa, it was a turning point for me. I’d like to thank him for that. In this series, with the left-right combination, I’m playing wherever I’m needed. The flexibility is good, and I’m adapting well to it,” said Tilak.

The duo shares a strong camaraderie, having played together for Mumbai Indians in the IPL since Tilak joined in 2022. Tilak described Suryakumar as a supportive and approachable leader who fosters a sense of belonging for every player, including newcomers.

“It feels great when someone like Suryakumar Yadav, the captain of India, is with us. On and off the field, he bonds so well with everyone. He spends time with players, which makes things easier for us on the field. It’s very beneficial not just for me but for the entire team,” Tilak elaborated.

India Eyeing Series Victory in Rajkot

India, currently leading the five-match series 2-0, will face England in the third T20I at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot on January 28. A win in Rajkot will seal the series for India, with Tilak and Suryakumar expected to play pivotal roles.

Fans eagerly await the next match as India’s young guns, guided by experienced leaders, aim to continue their dominant form.
