Telangana Boosts Rice Research and Exports

Hyderabad February 17,2025

In response to the significant increase in rice cultivation and the challenges posed by varying weather conditions, the Telangana government has intensified its focus on rice research and export strategies.

Collaborative Research Efforts

On February 17, 2025, the Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU) and the Indian Institute of Rice Research (IIRR), both based in Hyderabad, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance paddy productivity. The agreement was formalized at PJTSAU’s administrative building in Rajendranagar, with Vice-Chancellor Professor Aldas Janaiah and IIRR Director Dr. R. Meenakshi Sundaram leading the proceedings. PJTSAU Registrar Dr. G.E. Ch. Vidyasagar was also present.

Professor Janaiah emphasized the necessity of developing climate-resilient rice varieties to withstand diverse weather conditions, ensuring high yields for farmers. He also highlighted the potential benefits of carbon credits in supporting farmers economically.

Surplus Production and Export Initiatives

Telangana currently boasts a surplus production of 5 million tonnes of rice. To address this, the state has secured an agreement to export 100,000 tonnes of rice varieties 1010 and 1064 to the Philippines. This initiative aims to tap into the global market, providing economic benefits to local farmers and positioning Telangana as a key player in international rice exports.

Efforts are also underway to educate farmers on technical aspects of cultivation and export processes, ensuring they are well-equipped to meet international standards and demands.

Future Outlook

The collaboration between PJTSAU and IIRR signifies a strategic move to bolster rice research, focusing on developing varieties that can thrive under various climatic conditions. This partnership, combined with proactive export strategies, is poised to transform Telangana’s rice cultivation into a modern, globally competitive industry.

By aligning research initiatives with market demands, Telangana aims to enhance the livelihoods of its farmers while contributing significantly to the global rice supply chain.
