From ‘Stuartpuram of Thieves’ to University Vice-Chancellor: The Inspiring Journey of Dr. Sathupati Prasanna Sree

Stuartpuram, a village in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district, once bore the stigma of being labeled the “Stuartpuram of Thieves.” Established in 1910 as a rehabilitation colony for the Erukala tribe, its residents were historically marginalized and branded as a “criminal tribe.” Despite the Andhra Pradesh government’s 1976 decree removing this label, societal discrimination persisted, compelling many to resort to illicit liquor production for survival. However, through the unwavering efforts of social activists like Lavanam and Hemalatha, the community began to transform, with education emerging as a beacon of hope.

Amidst this backdrop, Dr. Sathupati Prasanna Sree’s journey stands as a testament to resilience and determination. Born on September 2, 1964, Dr. Sree pursued higher education with zeal. She earned her Ph.D. from Sardar Patel Mahavidyalaya and commenced her academic career as an assistant professor at Tirupati Women’s University. Her dedication led her to Andhra University, where she served as a professor and head of the English Department, amassing over 38 years of teaching experience, including 28 years in administrative roles.

Dr. Sree’s contributions to linguistics are monumental. She is renowned for devising scripts for 19 Indian tribal languages, a pioneering effort that has played a crucial role in preserving these endangered tongues. Her commitment to tribal communities earned her the prestigious ‘Nari Shakti Puraskar’ in 2021, India’s highest civilian honor for women, awarded by President Ram Nath Kovind.

In recognition of her academic and social contributions, the Andhra Pradesh government appointed Dr. Sree as the Vice-Chancellor of Adikavi Nannayya University in Rajahmundry. This historic appointment marks the first time a woman from the Erukala community has ascended to such a distinguished position in academia.

Dr. Sree’s journey from a village overshadowed by prejudice to the helm of a reputable university exemplifies the transformative power of education and perseverance. Her story not only challenges societal stereotypes but also inspires countless individuals from marginalized communities to pursue their dreams against all odds.
